🍺 Irish Drinking Games

These drinking games capture the spirit of an Irish pub — social, competitive, and perfectly paired with a pint. Great for starting your St. Patrick’s Day party or as the main event. Combine with Kings Cup or Flip Cup for maximum Celtic chaos.

1. Irish Poker

The classic four-round card game that gets everyone drinking fast. Round 1: Guess red or black (wrong = 2 drinks). Round 2: Higher or lower than your first card (wrong = 3 drinks). Round 3: In between or outside your two cards (wrong = 4 drinks). Round 4: Guess the suit (wrong = 5 drinks, right = give out 5).

Best for: 4-8 players who want fast-paced action

2. Celtic Circle (Irish Kings Cup)

Standard Kings Cup rules with Irish twists: 4s = “Floor” becomes “Sláinte!” (everyone toasts), 7s = “Heaven” becomes “Raise your glass,” Kings fill the “Pot of Gold” cup in the center. Draw the fourth King? Drink the pot and kiss the Blarney Stone (take a shot).

Best for: 5-15 players, works great for mixed groups

3. Guinness Relay

Teams race to drink and flip pints of Guinness (or any stout). First team where all members finish and successfully flip their cup wins. Losers do an Irish toast and take a penalty shot of whiskey.

💰 Dares hit different when there’s money on the line.

Best for: 6-20 players, team-based competition

4. Shamrock Shake

Roll three dice. If any show the same number (a “pair”), drink that many sips. Three of a kind (a “shamrock”)? Everyone else drinks. Roll three different numbers? You’re safe. Optional: Green dice only!

Best for: 3-8 players who like dice games

5. The Blarney Stone

A designated object (literally any rock or heavy coaster) is the Blarney Stone. Whoever holds it can make anyone drink at any time. But if you set it down, anyone can grab it. Gets chaotic fast as people steal it mid-conversation.

Best for: 5-15 players, background game that runs all night

6. Pot of Gold

Fill shot glasses with different drinks (whiskey, beer, green mixer, etc.) and place them in a circle around a “pot” (bowl or cup). Players take turns spinning a bottle. Drink whatever it points to. Finish the circle? You found the pot of gold — everyone else drinks.

Best for: 4-10 players who like surprises

7. Leprechaun Says

Like Simon Says, but Irish. “Leprechaun says take a drink!” Everyone drinks. “Take a drink!” Anyone who drinks without the “Leprechaun says” has to finish their current drink. Rotate the Leprechaun role after every 3 rounds.

Best for: 5-12 players, especially after a few rounds of other games

🍻 Pub Crawl & Bar Games

Whether you’re hitting actual pubs or setting up stations at home, these games bring authentic Irish bar energy. Perfect for creating a DIY pub crawl experience at your house party.

8. At-Home Pub Crawl

Set up 4-6 “pubs” (stations) around your house or apartment. Each station has a different drink and a mini-challenge. Station 1: Irish whiskey + trivia question. Station 2: Guinness + darts throw. Station 3: Green beer + coin flip game. Collect stamps (stickers) at each station to win prizes.

Best for: 8-25 players, perfect for house parties

9. Irish Darts

Play standard darts with drinking rules. Hit a single = opponent drinks 1. Hit a double = opponent drinks 2. Hit a triple = opponent drinks 3. Miss the board entirely? Finish your drink. Bullseye = choose someone to take a shot.

Best for: 2-4 players per game, rotate through groups

10. Pool Hall Rules

Standard pool with Irish pub rules: Sink a solid = give 1 drink. Sink a stripe = take 1 drink (or vice versa). Scratch = take 2 drinks. Sink the 8-ball early = finish your drink and buy the next round. Winner picks the next matchup.

Best for: 2-4 players, good between other games

11. Quarters (Dublin Edition)

Bounce a quarter into a shot glass. Make it = pick someone to drink. Make 3 in a row = make a new rule. Miss 3 in a row = you drink. Irish twist: successful bounces are announced with “Sláinte!” or don’t count.

Best for: 3-8 players, classic bar game

12. Bar Bet Challenge

Everyone puts in $1-5 for a pot. Take turns challenging each other to bar bets (balance a coin on a folded bill, flip a full beer glass without spilling, etc.). Succeed = stay in. Fail = drink and drop out. Last person standing wins the pot.

Best for: 4-10 players who like skill challenges

13. Bartender Says

One person is the “bartender” for a round. They call out drink orders and everyone has to mime making them correctly. Wrong move = drink. Call “Last call!” and everyone has to raise their glass. Forget? Drink. Bartender rotates every 5 minutes.

Best for: 6-15 players, good icebreaker

🍀 Luck-Based Games

St. Patrick’s Day is all about the luck of the Irish! These games test your fortune with coins, dice, and good old-fashioned chance.

14. Luck of the Irish

Simple coin flip game: Flip a coin, call it. Right = give out 2 drinks. Wrong = take 2 drinks. Win 3 in a row = immunity for one round (play a “lucky charm” card if you have one). Lose 3 in a row = finish your drink. Pure luck, pure chaos.

Best for: 2-8 players, quick rounds

15. Four-Leaf Clover Hunt

Hide green paper clovers around the party space (some have 3 leaves, some have 4). Periodically call “clover hunt!” and everyone searches. Find a 3-leaf = take a drink. Find a 4-leaf = give out 4 drinks and keep the clover (worth points). Person with most 4-leafs at the end wins.

Best for: 8-20 players, background game all party

16. Leprechaun’s Gold

Hide chocolate coins or bottle caps around the party. When someone finds gold, they can cash it in: 1 coin = give 1 drink, 3 coins = make someone take a shot, 5 coins = immune to the next game you lose. But if the “leprechaun” (rotating role) catches you searching, you drink and lose your coins.

Best for: 6-15 players, adds scavenger hunt element

17. Rainbow Roulette

Line up 7 shot glasses in rainbow order, filled with different drinks (red = cranberry vodka, orange = OJ mimosa, etc.). Spin a bottle to see which color you drink. Land on green? Everyone drinks. Land on gold (empty center)? You’re safe and give out 3 drinks.

Best for: 4-10 players, visual and fun

18. Snake Chase

Inspired by St. Patrick chasing snakes from Ireland. One person is “St. Patrick” and spins in a circle 3 times with eyes closed while others scatter. St. Patrick has 30 seconds to catch a “snake” (tag someone). Catch someone = they drink. Miss everyone = St. Patrick drinks. Tagged person becomes new St. Patrick.

Best for: 5-12 players, needs some space

19. Pot o’ Gold Poker

Everyone antes a coin (real or chocolate) into a pot. Play one hand of poker (5 card draw). Winner takes the pot AND gets to assign drinks: High card = 1 drink, pair = 2 drinks, two pair = 3 drinks, etc. Royal flush = everyone finishes their drinks.

Best for: 4-8 players who know poker basics

🎓 Irish Trivia & Knowledge Games

Test your knowledge of Irish culture, history, and drinking facts. These games reward the clever and punish the clueless — perfect for St. Patrick’s Day.

20. Irish Pub Trivia

Classic pub trivia with Irish categories: Irish history, Dublin landmarks, famous Irish people, Irish whiskey brands, Celtic mythology, Irish slang, and traditional music. Wrong answer = drink. Get all questions in a round right = give out drinks equal to the round number.

Best for: 6-20 players in teams

21. Blarney or Baloney

“Two truths and a lie” Irish edition. Each person shares 3 “facts” about Ireland — two true, one fake. Group votes on the lie. Fooled the majority? They all drink. Got caught? You drink. Great for learning weird Irish facts.

Best for: 4-12 players

22. Name That Irish Song

Play 10-second clips of Irish songs (traditional, U2, Enya, The Cranberries, etc.). First to shout the correct song title is safe. Everyone else drinks. Play 5 rounds and the person with most points picks someone to take a shot.

Best for: 5-15 players with a good playlist

23. Irish Slang Challenge

Best for: 4-10 players

24. Who Said It: Irish Edition

Best for: 4-12 players

25. County Map Challenge

Best for: 3-8 players, gets competitive

👥 Team Competition Games

Divide into teams for these larger-scale Irish games. Great for building energy and creating friendly rivalries at bigger St. Patrick’s Day parties.

26. Irish Olympics

Multi-event tournament: Beer pong, flip cup, quarters, darts, and trivia. Teams earn points for each event. Bonus points for creative team names (Shamrock Shakers, Dublin Destroyers, etc.). Last place team takes a group shot at the end.

Best for: 8-24 players in teams of 4-6

27. Relay Race: Emerald Edition

Teams line up. First person chugs a green beer, spins around a shillelagh (or any stick) 3 times, then tags the next person. First team done wins. Losing teams take penalty shots. Bonus: anyone who spills during the spin drinks again.

Best for: 8-20 players, needs some space

28. Leprechaun Toss

Teams take turns tossing a small “leprechaun” plushie (or any small toy) into targets at various distances. Closest to the pot of gold (a bowl or bucket) wins the round. Losing team drinks. Best of 5 rounds determines overall winner.

Best for: 6-16 players

29. Green Pong

Standard beer pong but every cup has green beer or has green food coloring added. Bounce shot = 2 cups and a shamrock sticker for your cheek. Win the game = losers chug a green shot.

Best for: 4 players per game, tournament style

30. Tug of War (Pub Style)

Instead of rope, two teams race to finish a relay of drinks. Team 1 drinks, flips cup, passes to next person. Team that finishes and flips all cups first wins. Losing team does an Irish toast and finishes any remaining drinks.

Best for: 8-16 players, flip cup variation

31. Shenanigans Scavenger Hunt

Teams get a list of Irish-themed items to photograph or collect: something green, a shamrock, a leprechaun drawing, someone doing a jig, a Guinness pour, etc. First team to complete the list OR most items in 20 minutes wins. Losers drink for each item they missed.

Best for: 8-20 players, works great in larger spaces

🃏 Irish Card Games

Beyond Irish Poker, these card games add variety to your St. Patrick’s Day. Perfect for smaller groups or when you want a focused game at the table. Pair with other card drinking games for a full game night.

32. Forty-Five (Irish 45s)

Traditional Irish trick-taking game adapted for drinking. Play standard 45s rules (trump suits, best 5 cards). Lose a hand = drink for each trick you lost by. Get “45” points in a single hand = everyone else drinks. Perfect for card sharks.

Best for: 4-6 players who like strategic games

33. Irish Switch

Crazy Eights / UNO style game with drinking rules. Play a 2 = next player draws 2 and drinks 2. Play an 8 = switch direction and last person to say “switch” drinks. Play a Jack = everyone slaps the table, last one drinks. Run out of cards = assign 5 drinks.

Best for: 3-8 players

34. Green Jack (Blackjack)

Standard blackjack with drinking stakes. Bust = drink. Beat the dealer = dealer drinks. Get 21 = everyone else drinks. Get blackjack (Ace + face card) = pick someone to take a shot. Dealer busts = everyone is safe that round.

Best for: 3-7 players + dealer

35. Three Card Brag

British/Irish poker variant. Each player gets 3 cards and bets on having the best hand. High card loses = drink. Pair beats high card. Three of a kind (prial) = everyone else drinks. Play “blind” (without looking at cards) for double drink stakes.

Best for: 4-8 players

36. Higher or Lower: Dublin Style

Flip a card. Guess if the next card is higher or lower. Right = you’re safe and can pass or continue. Wrong = drink. Get 5 right in a row = assign 5 drinks. Get 10 right = assign a shot. Keep going until you miss — can you make it to the “pot of gold” (15 in a row)?

Best for: 2-8 players, simple and fast

🎲 Dice & Coin Games

Simple games that only need dice or coins. Perfect for pub settings or when you want quick rounds between other activities.

37. Thirty-One

Best for: 2-6 players

38. Ship, Captain, Crew

Classic dice game. Roll 5 dice trying to get 6 (ship), 5 (captain), 4 (crew) in order. Remaining dice are your “cargo” (points). Highest cargo wins. Irish version: Winner is “Captain” and assigns drinks. Loser “walks the plank” (takes a shot).

39. Sixes

Best for: 3-8 players

40. Coin Stack Challenge

Players take turns stacking coins on top of a bottle or glass. Knock the stack over? Drink for each coin that fell, then restart. Successfully add a coin? You’re safe. Stack reaches 10 coins? Everyone else drinks and you reset.

Best for: 3-6 players, needs steady hands

41. Flip or Sip

Flip a coin behind your back. Others guess heads or tails. Wrong guessers drink. Right guessers are safe. Flipper drinks if everyone guesses correctly. Simple, fast, works between other games.

🎵 Celtic Music Games

Irish music deserves its own games. From jig challenges to sing-alongs, these games celebrate the musical side of St. Patrick’s Day.

Best for: Any size group, needs a good playlist

Best for: 4-15 players

46. Lyric Finish

Best for: 4-10 players with some Irish music knowledge

🏃 Outdoor & Active Games

If weather permits (or you have space), these active games get everyone moving. Great for yard parties or larger St. Patrick’s Day gatherings.

47. Shamrock Toss

Best for: 4-12 players, outdoor or large indoor space

48. Leprechaun Tag

One person is the leprechaun (wears a green hat). If the leprechaun tags you, you have to drink and freeze for 30 seconds. Unfreeze by having another player tag you. Leprechaun can’t tag the same person twice in a row. Rotate leprechaun every 5 minutes.

Best for: 10-20 players, large outdoor space
